Meet Ross Jackson: The Story Behind Patronus Law

In this Q&A, Ross Jackson, CEO, shares why he built Patronus Law, what clients gain from a legal partner who knows their business from the inside and, why he believes the future of legal support is fractional.

Ross, tell us about your background and experience and, how it has shaped your approach to legal leadership?

I’ve worked as a corporate and commercial lawyer in Ireland, Australia, Portugal and the UK. Working across multiple jurisdictions has given me a deep appreciation for how organisations operate, how they make decisions, and how culture influences risk.

Over the past 25 plus years, I’ve advised on corporate transactions, M&A, banking and security, commercial contracts and governance. That breadth of experience — combined with seeing how different boards and leadership teams think — has shaped a very practical, commercially grounded approach to legal support.

It taught me that legal advice only works when it aligns with how an organisation actually functions. You can’t separate risk from culture, strategy or day-to-day operations. My career has been about bridging those worlds.

You spent much of your career in traditional law firms. What did that experience show you?

My time in traditional law firms enabled me to see the disconnect between an organisation’s legal needs and the services being provided by a traditional corporate law firm. This often resulted in overpaying for legal work the organisation didn’t yet require.

Also, the lack of understanding of an organisation’s culture and risk tolerances can often prevent a firm from taking a risk-based approach to an organisation’s legal requirements. That results in poor application of legal resources and, ultimately, the organisation firefighting unforeseen risks.

What changed when you moved in-house?

As an employed in-house general counsel, I saw how a dedicated legal partner could unlock growth, close deals faster and protect organisational value. One of the key benefits is knowing the organisation from the inside out, which enables a strategic focus on the legal issues that matter to the organisation — something a traditional law firm struggles to do.

However, what an in-house general counsel gains from being embedded in an organisation and immersed in its culture, it loses in terms of the depth of experience a traditional law firm brings.

How does Patronus Law resolve that challenge?

Patronus Law is built to bridge that trade-off. We embed within our clients’ organisations, like an in-house general counsel — learning the business, the culture and the risk tolerances — but do it as a fractional partner, so you only use the expertise you actually need.

Because of the depth of experience of our team, we can still run point on complex transactions, regulatory programmes and vendor negotiations.

“You get the depth of an outside firm without the overhead or disconnect.”

The result is a legal partner who knows your organisation inside out, stays strategic on the issues that matter, and keeps costs tied directly to the value delivered.

What is the core philosophy behind Patronus Law?

It’s simple: legal support should be a strategic asset, not a cost centre.

We believe organisations deserve a trusted advisor and legal partner who understands them, aligns with their goals, and delivers value directly tied to outcomes. By combining embedded partnership with deep legal expertise, we give clients the clarity, confidence and commercial advantage they need to grow.

Why do you believe the future of legal support is fractional?

Most growing businesses don’t need a full-time legal team at every stage — but they do need senior judgement they can rely on. A fractional model gives them exactly that: experienced counsel who knows the business from the inside, scaled to what the business needs right now.

You only use the expertise you actually need, without the fixed overhead of a full-time hire or the uncertainty of a traditional firm. And because legal costs stay tied to the value delivered, legal becomes a source of momentum rather than a bottleneck.

Who do you work with, and how?

We work with growth-stage technology companies across sectors, from SaaS, AI and data to logistics, property technology, infrastructure and online gaming.

We also support defined pieces of work through Project-Based Legal Support — M&A, due diligence, compliance programmes and legal health checks — and help organisations bring discipline and clarity to their legal budgets through Legal Procurement & Spend Management.

What should a business do if it’s considering fractional legal support?

Start with a conversation. We’ll take the time to understand your business, where legal is slowing you down and what level of support you actually need. You can book an initial consultation call or get in touch and we’ll take it from there.
